Alternative Therapy is now a star in the firmament! That’s right – star Cygnys RA 21h58m56.26s D50*13’9.18″ – has been renamed “Alternative Therapy”. Now my broadcasts, which have always been aimed towards outer space, now have a destination in mind. Of course, star “Alternative Therapy” is 6,000 light years away – and would take about 126,000 years to reach – traveling at the speed of light. But, that’s just a technicality. We up there, Baby! Just keep looking up.

Want a star of your own? Contact the International Star Registry at www.starregistry.com – and for a modest fee – they will hook you up!

I sometime get asked about the name “nixie tubes” used in the URL of this site. Nixies were used as numeric displays in early digital volt meters, multi-meters, frequency counters and many other types of technical equipment. They also appeared in costly digital time displays used in research and military establishments, and in many early electronic desktop , including the first: the Sumlock-Comptometer ANITA MK VII of 1961. Later alphanumeric versions in fourteen segment display format found use in airport arrival/departure signs and stock ticker displays.  Some elevators also used nixies to display the floor numbers.  Being a fan of obsolete technology it seemed appropriate. And now you know the rest of the story!

Alternative Therapy was preempted by the Humboldt County Quake of 2010. Starting early (at 6:45PM) – I did manage to play some music and report on the quake until 7:01PM when the UPS power failed (the studio operates on back-up batteries for approximately 2 1/2 hours – the transmitter site has it’s own back-up generator). KHSU went dark for 40 minutes until HSU Plant Ops started the generator for the Theater Arts Building.  I then went back on the air – and in between some music – interviewed various public officials and members of the KHSU’s staff. An interesting night of public radio to say the least…
